The large motor yacht was most likely registered in the Cook Islands.
 
Personally, I don't think it really matters. I tend to wear an ensign that suits the colour of the boat, sort of colour co ordinated. At the moment I am using a white ensign to match my white hull, so you can guess what colour ensign I wore with my last Blue hull. I think it looks far better and sets a standard, do what you think looks best.
 
I worked on a hotel barge in Burgundy in 1994 dealing solely with American guests; while we had a French tricolour at the stern with the port of registration ( Auxerre ) for legalities painted on, at the bows there were small Stars & Stripes and EU flags, which were just tokens of allegiance.

I agree with you and thats why my red ensign so suits my Etap.;)
