Hylomar red vs cork gasket (for thermostat housing sealing) - advice please!

Hi all,
I have misplaced the replacement cork gasket for my BMC thermostat housing. I intended to do this job today so don't want to wait for another gasket in the post. Will hylomar red do the job as well? The mating faces are pitted and have some old screwdriver damage from being prised apart over the years. I'd appreciate some advice here as I've already failed to solve the leak once so want to get it right this time!

I wouldn't put it together without a gasket of some sort. If you can't get the proper one can you make one from thick paper like an old chart?
