The last couple of times I've gone aboard (after a week or a fortnight) my VHF has been slightly reluctant. I switch on and it lights up (either with the usual CH16 display or with all the lcd bars lit) and then goes blank after a few moments. After repeating this procedure a few times it seems to work normally.

What do you think is happening? Should I start saving for a new one?

Sometimes on this unit the on/off switch becomes loose and shorts out varoius bits on the chassis - open it up and check this.

Tross seems to know of a particlar problem with this radio otherwise i would suggest that it is dirty contacts in the on off switch if switching it on and off a few times cures the problem. Heaven knows how that would explain the symptoms you observe though.
