While I am still waiting for my new Lift pump which is still stuck in Madrid Customs, I have been continuing my research on the Stephen Jones Hustler32. Evidently there were 27 yachts built of which I have one and the prototype Smokey Bear sank during the 79 Fastnet Race. It would be great to discover what happened to all these yachts some will have changed names and most of them will have been raced. My Hustler 32 spent most of its history under the name Sancerre and its sails no longer carry sail numbers, Sales receipts state a build date of 1979 but there are no original documents or ID plate with build date and number. So I would be interested to hear any Hustler32 Story's.

Hello Mike, I'm from holland and found a hustler 32. Thinking of buying it. But have a question. There isn't much on the internet about the hustler. The one that I can buy has a mast on the deck with running backstages and a backstage. For solo that is very inconveniant. Does you boat has the same setup? If I'm going to buy it I have to do a major refit. Thank you and I hope you still have fun with your boat. And sorry but I don't know how to sent a private message.

I am a previous owner of Gunslinger a SJ Hustler 32 . If you would like any details of the class pm me . I am puzzeled by you saying it has a deck stepped mast and running backstays . Has it been remasted ? All the 32 s i have seen were keel stepped and either fractional or masthead rig . There is a very good one on Facebook at the moment for sale . For short handed work I really like the old IOR boats because they have smallish mains and if you use a number 3 or 4 foresail an easy sailplan to handle . They are great boats .

Hello Mike, I don't know how to pm. But thank you for the information. The current doesn't know al lot about the historie of the boat. I searched on the internet for pictures and think that I found one other sj32 that is also deck stepped. I think that is strange also. If it has been remasted it is still a strange thing to do. I found the one on facebook, it is also on a broker site. Only the measeruments are length and beam are strangly enough different from data of sailboatdata. I wil try to contact the owners although I don't have facebook. It looks okay, but looks also it could use some love. What kind of details of the class you have?

You should be aware that most of this hull design had the engines positioned in the saloon and the conventional gearbox was replaced with a Hydraulic unit with hydraulic hoses running to a motor driving the propshaft. Mine was moved under the cockpit and as I have to replace the rear oil seal, I decided to upgrade the 50yr old hydraulics for which you will find no information if it was built in Loddon. I am very happy with this boat but it hasn't lived in the harsh conditions of the UK. The one you are looking at could be a money pit so be very careful.

Yes, the two boats. One that I was looking for in the Netherlands and the one from facebook have both I think still the originel engine position. I don't mind that. I am pro hydraulic but if it isn't yet I can replace that. Are there things to look for if I am going forward with the Hustler sj32? Points of weakness in the design or build quality. Yes, the harsh conditions isn't optimal but I think most of the boats are sold and used for racing and mainly in the north of europe. Your boat is then probably a rare example. Maybe you will sell the boat in the far future :). The boat that is in the Netherlands is in a technical good condition for it's age, the mast is a problem and I think it is not worth it money wice to replace the deck stepped mast for a keel stepped mast. Although the mast is very old but at a cost of +/- 10k the boat should be bought at like 5k.

I suppose the week point is going to be the mast if it is original. Mine was replaced in 2013 but the boom is original. It is getting a bit thin where the where the end block is screwed in. There isn't normally a chain locker although I did have a bow roller so I fitted an electric windless and drop the chain into a builders tub. I also had to reinforce the deck below the forstay which is the weak point I have found.
