Hurth transmission

I have a Hurth transmission to my Mercedes engine. Lately I have to rev up to engage gear, especially in reverse. Is this likely to be a problem with the morse cable or with the gearbox itself? Do I damage the gearbox by revving up? Manual says it’s ok but from what I gathered about cars I doubt it. Any advice?

Disconnect the cable at the gear box end, and select Forward/Neutral/reverse by hand with the short lever there. That will tell you if it is the cable or (probably) a worn cone.

Don't beat yourself up - I can't think straight in the evenings, no problems of a morning...

I disconnected the cable and pushed the lever by hand and gears engaged directly. Did some fine tuning with the cable and it’s better now. Not perfect but better.
