Hurth Gearbox Problem

Hello,

I have a Hurth HBW 15-2R gearbox on my perkins 4108M. At the moment the gearbox does not seem to fully engage in forward gear (reverse is fine). The shaft turns but full power/engagement takes a bit of effort. Usually after increasing the power then backing off (several times), there's a clunk and all is well for the rest of the day.

Has anyone had a similar problem or shed some light on this one ?

Thank you

Hmm, I had this problem on my smaller Hurth - cured with new friction discs internally and making sure all the gears etc moved freely on their shafts etc. It cured the problem but when I compared the old with the new disc - even measuring them there was no discernable difference. Another reason for this is a knackered thrust washer internally. Hurth spares are expensive but I used ASAP Supplies.
Mine would engage but nothing happened when engine revved, then it would go in with a bit of a 'clunk' then it was OK. Reverse was fine.
Make sure the control cable is moving sufficient - disconnect the cable and try and operate by hand. There is a specific movement that must be achieved - it's in the handbook if you have one. I spoke direct with ZF Gears - who now own Hurth and they were very helpful but can't remember their number

Thankyou for the information.

I have already contacted ZF Hurth. They were helpful and sent me a workshop manual & list of spares available. It appears that there are not very many parts still available for this gearbox. Thrust washers being one example.

However, after looking thru the workshop manual, there does not seem to be anything labeled friction discs. Could it be known as something else ?

Aah, 'friction discs' - probably the wrong word - as it is running in oil not sure what they are called - these are the discs with a bonded on bearing material interspersed with plain metal discs - technically speaking called a 'wet disc clutch' I thing - as opposed to a 'dry' friction disc(as in a car clutch). usually ina a 'pack' of 4, 6 or more pairs.
I'm not familiar with your particular g/box - mine was the HBW50 which is common. Have you tried http://www.asapsupplies.com/ for advice & spares? - I've found them very helpful in the past.
Good luck anyway.

From your description I think they maybe called Strip Sheets, laminary (inner & outer) in my manual.

However, A.S.A.P are calling them Friction Clutch Plates for other Hurth gearboxes.

How difficult was your gearbox rebuild ?

I had the same problem, eventualy I found there was wear on the cam which selects forward or reverse inside the gearbox.I built up the cam and it worked ok afterwards.
