Hi there,

I have been struggling to get my BMC with Hurth gearbox into forward gear.

It usually goes in after a big rev and decrease of throttle and as it warms up it works a bit better.

A friend opened it up to find that it needs a new set of clutches and thrust bearings and a rebuild.

I'm based in Oxford and wondering if anyone knows of someone who specialises in gearboxes and if they would be willing to do it?

What you do not say is what Hurth gearbox it is, IF it say a Hurth HBW 100 it has now been replaced with a ZF 10M as ZF Gearboxes took over Hurth some time ago.
However fear not I replaced my Hurth 100 for the new ZF 10 as they are an exact swop and its not rocket sciance to do it.
One thing I do recommend is while you have the gearbox out is wise to also consider replacing the drive plate because if its the same age as the gearbox and the drive plate goes you will then have to take it all out again,
I bought my new drive plate from R and D MARINE : Marine Damper Drive Plates
and my gearbox from Boat Gearboxes: Hydraulic and Mechanical Gearboxes : ZF Marine

However shop around including canal boat websites who also sell second hand and new Hurth gearboxes

Some way from Oxford but Warrington Transmission Centre are recommended, have done good work for me.

I have the hbw 50 gearbox and have the same problem sometime have to put it in to reverse and then throw in to forward before it will engage and as you say lesser problem when warms up.changing the oil seems to improve things for a time.

Hi peteK, I've changed oils which has improved things slightly. Have found making contact with Canal and Narrow Boat Equipment | Midland Chandlers to be going well. A lady there is being really helpful in finding out what box I have and if they have a reconditioned box that will fit. However, as my box is SO old most haven't seen one similar. We think it is the carl hurth munchen 94710 but not sure.

Your gearbox is nothing like mine so it must be an earlier one before hbw 100.
i did read somewhere that the gearbox needs to be filled to the top with oil every winter to prevent corrosion which may cause it to stick. Also to fill it with diesel and run it,tried that but little better.
