OK, I exagerate, but the winds across the LLyn Peninsula were horrendous, the worst I have known in the 25 years I have been going there. My Windy 8800, now properly named "Coney Island" is ready for re-launch. I put the new name decalls on her on Saturday and wandered around the boat yards. I went for a wander, because with completely white foamy seas, we couldn't get near the water - and it wasn't much better on Sunday. There was debri actually flying through the air with wind speeds at 70mph and gust (nay - blasts!) of much higher speeds.

Anyway, for those interested in sky high repair bills and not much to show for it, let me list the service of one Mr. Rob Walker at Harbour Marine Engineering Services to give you a different perspective You'll remember that my boat had a leaking and knackered transom shield, and they cost about £2000 new. Rob managed to have it rebuilt with Aluminium, then milled, machined and drilled - its now perfect!!

Transom Shield repair £110.00
Duo prop seals £28.00
Cow-Horn kit seals £23.18
Main doughnut seals £36.00
Transom outer seal £18.00
Master switch £26.50
ATF & Gearbox oil £24.50
Labour £550.00
TOTAL £818.18

Rob's labour is currently charged at £25 per hour - and you do get a good hours work!! He had to lift an engine out and he stripped both legs for this, amongst doing other work like repairing the entire fresh water system and the fridge.

I also treated the hull and top-sides to a clean by GRPro-Clean - fantastic!

So my learned friends - how does this compare with what you would get at you marine engineer / dealer? I think I've done well here.

All I need now is some decent weather!!

It sounds like you could have done a lot worse. The cost of repairs sounds very reasonable to me. I was in NW Thurs and Friday of last week and the wind was blowing a hooligan even then. Particularly around Llandudno / Conwy no wonder you could not get out.

Sure was windy, I don't remember 3 days of gale or very near gale force winds before, usually 12 - 24 hours and then it's blown itself out. Very unusual.

Good to see that everything's been done at very reasonable cost and just as importantly, very quickly. I'm also lucky in having an excellent engineer who charges even less than your guy, in fact I have to chase him to pay him! But he is so popular that once he's agreed to do any work he needs handcuffing to the job!

I had to put a new engine in the boat 4 years ago and for taking out the old one, a 6 cylinder diesel, and removing all the marinisation parts and then installing the new one and replacing the marinisation bits I think I paid £300 and even then he never gave me a bill, I just forced the cash in his hand and said to let me know how much more I owed him. He never came back to me so I guess he was happy.

Re:goody glad its sorted.

Things are never quite so good or so bad as they appear at the time.
Also when you buy your next boat you will be o soooo aware of what to to watch out for.My own personal little first offer calculation involves working out what can go wrong and deducting that from asking price, makes a good starting point for negociations.
Mind you, does tend to make steam sometimes appear from sellers ears /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re:goody glad its sorted.

That is a good idea, however, we calculated around £4k of work and got that off the price, I think we have passed £12k now.... /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Maybe our calculations were a little off, also, I don't think they would have accepted an offer £12k below what they were asking.... /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

But yes, we worked on the same logic.

Dave, that is superb, nice you got it all sorted for so little really. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re:goody glad its sorted.

Well Fred, in a round about way, I reckon I must have arrived at this point. Windy 8800's of this age but without new engines and an LPG conversion are going at £24k-ish. I paid £18k and have spent £6k. So - I'm probably there or there abouts. I am also wiser! Cheers.
