Further to my note on nicho's thread, I have now found a lot more information on what is likely to happen. (www.wxforecasts.com)

In summary,

The esimated mimimum pressure is 948mb
Maximum sustained winds up to 120mph with higher gusts.
Rainfall 5 to 10 inches, with isolated higher amounts
Coastal storm surge flooding of 6 to 10 feet above normal tide levels.
Large and dangerous battering waves can be expected.

Likely to hit and pass later on today and during the night (UK time).

Considering the island is only 22 sq miles and 250ft at the highest point, they are in for a battering. Our boating colleagues are clearly going to suffer damage to, or loss of, their vessels.

We hope to get an update from SWMBO's folks (all lifelong residents) during Saturday, but this is totally dependant on the telecomms infrastructure. Having spent 3 years working on it myself, I know the international facilities are pretty robust, but havn't been tested to this extent. It is the local lines (ie up poles) that are most at risk.

Although not regular churchgoers, we are praying now !!

Coming this way?

The current NOAA forecast is that Fabian could pass to the north of Scotland sometime Tuesday/Wednesday night. (See HERE).

Of course it will be much reduced in intensity by then but would still give us some bad weather.

I'm curious as to why this thread has appeared? Don't you think the people in Bermuda are able to look after themselves?

I'm most familiar with the harbour at St Georges which is usually crowded with yachts at this time of the year. If anyone has knowledge of what happened there during Fabian please post the news.

If you look at www.theroyalgazette.com there are a few photographs and some text specifically about St Georges.

Biggest problem seems to be that the causeway has suffered a lot of damage, preventing access to the airport.

Mind you, the airport was unusable for a period of time on Saturday, due to the number of boats which had ended up on the runway !!

I posted this thread, because I had asked on a different one (called Fabian!) for any websites providing information about the hurricane. My wife is a born and bred Bermudian and we were very concerned about all her family and friends, as well as the island as a whole.

I also thought that other forumites would be interested, as Bermuda is a very popular mid-Adlantic destination and stop-over point, and others have shown their interest.

As it happens we were able to make telephone contact several times during Friday night/Saturday morning.

Personally, I am curious why a lot of threads appear on the forum, but I am not obliged to read them all, and nor are you obliged to read mine.

Sorry if you feel it was inappropriate ......... cancel that - I'm not sorry at all!

I apologise if I offended you and I'm pleased to hear that your family are safe. I'm aware of the gravity of the situation in Bermuda, although they seem to have it under control as they declined help from the RN today.
I didn't think that the post was innapropriate, I was just curious as to why it was posted on a UK site. Obviously you had good reasons and I apologise once again for any misunderstanding.

Brett,

I guess I started it with my original posting. Bermuda is a long way off, but looking at the synoptic predictions at the time, it seemed to be heading our way, and very vigourous indeed. Like I suspect most sailors, I take a keen interest in the weather, and thought it may be of some interest to other forum members, particularly if they were planning a trip during the week concerned.

Cheers,

Mike N.
