I had occasion to visit the lock today by water - just to see what progress has been made.

Was greeted by "you can't come through"

It transpired that the works are still not complete, bollards are being painted in gleaming white "boater proof" paint and there's summat wrong with the gates.

I am reliably informed that the current restrictions (open 11 ack emma until 12 ditto) will apply this weekend and next week too.
I had expected to receive an email from that nice Mr. Graham, upon my return home. Nothing, zilch, again.

So I'm publicising the matter for anyone who was going upstream in the near future.....

Just received details from Andrew Graham (via Maria de Silva) with continued delays during March. Unfortunately no real indication of availability in April though!

River Thames – lock restriction
Hurley Lock
Tuesday 1 March to Saturday 26 March 2011
Due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to extend the restriction at Hurley Lock. We would like to apologise for this delay and thank you in advance for your continued patience.
Directions for navigation and general information during this restriction.
Over the winter months the lock gates at Hurley lock have been replaced and the lock chamber has been refurbished.
The main work is now complete but there is still some construction work going on around the lock area. We will be opening the lock from 1 March 2011 but to allow this we have had to put in place the following restrictions to ensure the safety of our customers.

Access through the lock during the dates shown above will only be between these times: 11.00 – 12.00.

There will be a lock keeper on duty during the time of your appointment to help you travel through the lock.

During this period boaters will not be allowed off their boats while passing through the lock.

You can make an appointment by phoning 01491 828459.
We apologise for any inconvenience this restriction causes.
Thank you for your patience during this time

I have no problem with the need to carry out work, or indeed with the fact that there may, sometimes, be unavoidable changes to schedules.

I do, however, have a problem with an apparent inability, or unwillingness, to recognise that customers should be kept informed.

The technology and systems are in place - people just need to be made to 'think communicate' and use them.

As of a few minutes ago, the visitthames website page for closures and restrictions has still not been updated with the new information.

As we are member's of the British Marine Federation and due to our location receive Thames based info via their secretary (the Thames region)

Never thought of posting it till now!

Hurley is open

We also took our first cruise of the season and went up through Hurley and back this afternoon, someone has already left a nice smeer of blue paint on the port side wall going down stream, ouch!
Smashing day though. We spotted a Kingfisher sat on a branch in the sun just below Medmeham, its blue back was almost dazzling with the sun shining straight on it, a good to be alive day if ever. Lets hope the summer is a good one.
