I'm moving up from dinghy sailing and am looking at bilge keeled 24/25' sailing craft. I'd be very grateful to anybody who is prepared to share their experiences of either or both of the Hurley 24/70 and the Jaguar 25. I want something that I can rig for single handed sailing as well as something to take one or more of the family from time to time.

Many thanks,

Mark

I sail a Hurley 24/70, but mine is fin keeled. Tough as old boots and a joy under sail. Lovely safe cockpit and stays remarkably "dry" even without a sprayhood. I expect the Jag would give you a bit more space below though.

Comes down to compromises of seagoing v family friendliness. Jag is a fairly modern American design (stems from the Catalina range) where the Hurley is a more solidly build narrow aspect boat.
When I was looking at trading up from a Hurley 22 I considered both a 24/70 and Jags. The Hurleys were longer in the tooth and showed it cosmetically. The missus wanted the space of the Jag and liked the big hatch opening, but the Hurley would stand up to much more.
In the end we couldn't agree so went for a bigger, heavy displacement boat.

Have had several years experience of Hurley 24/70. I mostly single handed, but sometimes joined by pre-teen son. Plenty of room for two of us. Has a full sized heads and plenty of galley space.

It is an excellent sea boat, if a bit heavy. It certainly handled the overfalls around Start Point without problems. Sails down wind well with a spinny.

Mine is a fin keel, with bulk of keel weight encapsulated. Pity you want a bilge keeler because mine is for sale at a very low price.

Good hunting.

Had a fin keeled Hurley 24/70 for about ten years - wonderful boats - would highly recommend them.
There is a Hurley Owners' Association which covers all the Hurley designs. The contact used to be John Udy - 01392 490939 or hurleyowner@freeuk.com. If that doesn't work, get back to me, as I have an old membership list.
