Hi all,

Anyone care to comment (either here or by PM) about the sailing qualities of the Hunter Legend 40.5, please?

Specifically, sea keeping in rough stuff, and her ability to windward are my areas of concern...

Don't know, but we are trying to find out about the 36 on exactly the same areas, trouble is Peters don't seem to have any 36's available for a test sail!!??!!

Any un-biased comments please!

There was a Legend 410 on the Rally Portugal that admittedly was particularly well sailed and seemed to go very well. Impressively in fact. Added to which the skipper had been washed overboard in the Irish sea in very heavy weather on the way to Plymouth and was rescued in minutes by his crew. Again he had a very strong crew of big Irish lads. He also had good sails and was very capable. Is doing the ARC at the moment.

Conversely Opal had warned me off them when I was looking for a boat! And as you already know, they are the agents! Said they were marina yachts. 'Course this might have been their opinion of my abilities!

The only thing to do is try one yourself. A good sailor can make almost any boat look good! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have a Legend 36, and have been very happy. If you need info, please PM me. She's a complete doddle to sail, even single handed, marina handling is a piece of p1$$. Like all plastics though, may need to stay in port in a big sea. She's a bit heavier than most but still has a flat bottom.

Thanks so far...

Pops, could you give some indication please as to what you mean by a 'big sea'?

...and when you say 'all plastics' do you include HRs as 'plastic'? Oysters? What?

By "plastic" I mean the lightweights like Bavs, Jens, Bens, Legends etc, NOT the likes of HR etc.

We have not sailed our Legend in a big sea because we don't get them in the Clyde area where we have done most of our sailing. We have sailed in some big winds, however, up to 30 knts gusting 36 according to the wind gauge, and she was fine although well reefed. The good thing is that she is incredibly easy to reef.

I would imagine that in any sort of rough "short" sea, ie wave peaks close together, then we will have a rough ride. I guess that's true for most boats anyway, although the wider the boat the worse it will be. Legends being quite beamy (and therefore roomy and comfy) they will probably be uncomfortable. Not yet tried and don't plan to.

The boat IS a Cat A (RCD) so should be safe enough up to 4m waves as long as they are not breaking over the boat. Like many others, I believe the RCD categories to be a bit of a waste of time but at least the boat must have been trialled in those conditions in order to get the category.

All just personal opinions but we love the boat.

More if you like
