I am thinking of buying a Hunter Horizon 30. I have ordered the PBO review. Has anyone out there got one and can give me an unbiased view. Is there an owners association. Thanks in anticipation. Peter

We owned No 27 from new for seven years and I miss her greatly!

It doesn't have the largest volume for a 30footer but the sailing qualities are superb. Currently our old boat lives on the east coast and regularly cruises and the odd race to Holland and we keep in touch with her new owners who have also sailed with us on our new boat (a Bavaria in Greece)

The self tacking jib is very convenient if short-handed but running downwind you should get the optional "Scooper"

I once did Cherbourg to the Needles in 8 hours.

The build and fitting out is of a sound if not sophisticated style but all the fittings are well up to the job.

The engine to get is the 2GM20FW as the single pot motor is too small.

You can tell if it was kit built or factory completed by the badge near the tiller. ("Moulded and Built by..." for factory boats, "Moulded by..." for home completed)

Accomodation is very cosy and a good chart table is provided. The Cherry floor and saloon table are works of art. The heads is enormous for a boat of this size. The only negative might be the forecabin which although Hunters won't fit any berth of less than 2metres in length, is only suitable for occassional use by adults. Kids find it fine though and our two boys spent many a three week cruise in comfort.

The fractional rig works very well and it is fascinating to watch the heel reduce significantly as you tighten the backstay on a beat.

Good luck with her if you buy. IMO you won't get a better 30 footer.
