Are there any Hunter 272 owners out there that I might be able to pick the brains of?

General views as a multi day coastal boat around the Bristol channel, Devon, South Wales and maybe Ireland is the intended purpose. Hoping to be able to dry out easily on mud or sand.

Many thanks

Tim

I've had a 273 for 4 years on N Devon side of Bristol Channel and more than happy with it as I mostly sail single handed
I'm also biased because I don't think David Thomas ever designed a slow boat, but pm me if you want to discuss

Owner of a hunter horizon 26. Havn't been caught out in rough conditions yet so cant comment there. More then capable of sailing to Ireland. I'm planning a UK circumnavigation this year in the 26.

The 272 has a self tacking jib which is under canvased when the wind is aft of the beam. Most were supplied with a scooper or cruising chute to help.

Positives with the 26 (pretty much the same as the 272):

Amazing room fitted into <27 foot.
Twin keels designed well much better then the vertical bilge keels.
Handles easy both under power and sail.
All Lines led aft
Easy to single hand
Proper nav table
Fractional rig

Negatives:

Aft cabin a strange shape for a couple.
I find go forehead a little hair rising quite small. But all lines led aft remember so isn't a problem really.
Tendency to round up in anything above 20 knots-reef early. (the keels on the 272 have fat toes/ almost bulbs so should be better then the 26)
My water filler cap is inside under the forehead bunk means you have to run the hose pipe though cabin 272 might have deck filler not sure.
Under canvassed in light winds a tad slow and sticks to the water. I have a 3blade prop bad idea 2 blade is much better.

Hope that helps

I had one, good little boat but make sure you check out the dates that the dodgy resin was used on Hunters which caused a significant number of boats to have osmosis.
Details of affected models are on the Hunter assoc website/

As for similar there are not many boats which are similar but there were a small number of MG27's built with bilge keels. Very fine sailing boats if you can find one with that configuration.

1990 Horizon 27 in Chichester - what are your questions?

We've had ours for 7 years and have pimped it out with new instruments/plotter, heating, new sails, fridge conversion & Parasail†. Still on original engine.

Dries out twice a day on it's summer mooring - done 10 day family cruises Chi-Solent-Poole etc.

Sails pretty well for what it is, but cramped for more than 3 adults - open "forecabin" good for babies/children.

† In that order - basic updates, then something to keep SWMBO happy, then something for me ;-)
