hunter horizon 23\'

I'd be interested to learn how far any owner of this fairly small yacht has taken their vessel. I am an experienced yachtmaster but my dear crew and wife has limited knowledge about things nautical - accompanied by nerves of steel!

I tend to be very cautious and limit us to coastal trips of /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif 6 hours or less in decent weather. My boat has a 13.5HP diesel by the way.

Am I just getting too old and cautious or should I be pushing things along more positively? I spoke to one chap who had taken his HH23 across to Holland!!

Hi there,
IMO the hunter horizon 23 is a hardy little boat and probably capable of alot heavier weather than you fancy...

However IMO sailing should be fun and unless you're an RNLI voulanteer you dont need to push yourself.

Weather is very changable at best and if you are already out of your comfort zone, any deterioration in weather may take all the fun out of it.

If 6 hours away from base is what you are comfortable with i wouldn't push it.

sorry if its teaching you to suck eggs a bit with your experience but thats my opinion.

regards,

Nick

Took my Sonata (same hull) across to Holland, and got as far as Germany before having to come back. Had bad crossings both times in strong winds, and that hull is fairly uncomfortable in 36 hours of North Sea. However the boats are well built, and at least there is a lot more room on the Horizen 23. The limiting factor on what conditions you are out in and for how long is (as is usually) the crew.

I know the chap across the pontoon from me has taken his Hunter 23 from the Medway-Calais-Dover-Medway.

Not quite the same boat but very similar, we took out Hunter delta 25 over to Cherbourg Gurnsey, Jersey back via Alderney to the Solent a few weeks ago. Outboard powered with 10hrs range. Not really that worrying, could catch UK coast guard stations till about 15 miles short of France for weather updates which were our main worry given this summers weather. Hired a Life raft. Completed the whole trip at an average of 4.8Knts per the GPS. Pick your weather carefully and be preopared to come back by ferry and it went fine for us ( 2 adults and 2 small children)

The Hunter 23 is a great little boat but in rough weather it can be a little wearing. The boat will have no issues what so ever - I've had mine out in a 6-7 but you don't aft get kicked about in the chop. I think its rated as a Cat B.

I know of one that regulalry did Solent - Ch Islands. Your's with the inboard diesel would do even better. Time and your own desire to keep going are probably the limiting factors. The boat itself will probably largely take you wherever you want to (within reason)

|Surely another couple of grand will get you a 25 footer? 23 feet is I think great for local and coastal, esturial, work but if you expect to go further then I'd suggest you go for bigger,

I think the Gentleman poster already owns the boat and is more concerned about how far he and his family should venture rather than a 'what to buy' post.
