For many years, the RYA have sold ties with a special motif for Yachtmasters, initially it was for the Yachtmaster Offshore, then they came out with one for the Yachtmaster Ocean.
In the last couple of years, the Coastal Skipper has been renamed "Yachtmaster Coastal". There is apparently no tie for this qualification....
In the February edition of YM, the new section reports that some poor retired hospital consultant feels left out and has written to the RYA to complain about that the Yachtmaster Coastal does not qualify for a tie. No doubt the marketing team at the RYA will swiftly spring into action and design a new tie for this qualification. A real money spinner!
In fact, they could also knock out ties for Day Skippers, Competent Crews, Attendees of short courses like VHF, Sea Survival, and Radar. I would not advise a tie for the diesel engine course just in case it encourages people to where one whilst fixing the engine!
When I was working for a charter company / sailing school in the early 90's, we had a couple of clients who turned up to the yacht handover wearing ties. These tended to be very long handover as the chaps wearing these pointless things often were trying to look important in front of their crews. So after the first couple of encounters, I would pass the clients wearing "the tie" to another instructor
Would be interesting to see this thread develop - keep it fun please!
