I am planning to take "THE PRINCESS" along the grand sluice, up the Whitam and into the Humber.

I was thinking of breaking the journey into three parts and leaving the boat near Boston for a while and then in Lincoln.

Anyone have any suggestions about good places to leave my lovely yacht where the scrotes won't get it

I can get a one month license for "THE PRINCESS" for rivers only for £39

is that all I need

or do I need to pay for the whole system - which I think is £88

Boston Marina. One of the forumites berths there. Chapel staithes (Talk to the liveaboards there transport is difficult) Bardney Marina, Brayford Marina, Torksey Lock, Stockwith Basin and Keadby (both difficult entries for a small boat with small engine) As an aside, you can't tie up on the Ancholme below Horkstow Suspension bridge during the winter, as EA may just open the lock gates for flood relief.

Keadby and Stockwith are BW waters so you would need the whole system to enter there, Trent is Port waters

so can I do boston to the humber on the rivers license as long as I don't deviate from the main route

I assume I will be able to do some sailing the way I did up the Nene with my jury rig or should I just stow the mast to one side of the boat

Depends how quick you can get the mast down, river sailors are pretty good at getting the mast down and back up. You won't get through the railway Bridge at Boston, or the sluices. From Stamp end, you won't get away with the mast up at all. Bridges all the way to the Trent from there. After Gainsborough road bridge, you should be OK. There are stops, if you are not leaving the boat too long, refuelling and a bit of shopping at the Staithes at Gainsborough (fuel 100 yds, supermarkets 300yds Pub 70yds waterways key required), might want to wait out the tide change there and run for the Humber on the ebb, but watch out for the ships and barges running the ebb. Remember to catch Humberfalls at the right time as it can be a bit bouncy.

Re Humber via the back door

Your biggest problem may be catching enough wind on the witham/fosdyke section, the banks on both side are quite high so anything with a short mast may have to motor a lot of the way.

the weed in the Witham is quite bad at the moment but a couple of frosts should sort that out for you,Boston Sailing Club may be able to help with a cheaper mooring or even the Boston Motor yacht club if you let me know when I'll try and sort a mooring out in Lincoln at the Lincoln Boat Club

The Boston Sailing Club have races up to Langrick bridge so you'll be able to sail a bit although with the bridges it will be a hassle

if they can sail a dinghy then I can sail the slug

my plan is to leave the boat in boston for a week while I explore the area a bit - move it to lincoln and leave it there for a week or so

very happy to pay the clubs direct or bung money into rnli box
