As of 21st of May I started a new job and am working out of Hull.....

(Apart from a week in the middle where I went sailing..../forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

Anyway.... to the point....

I've driven every day over the Humber bridge, to see near perfect conditions.... 15kts or so, sun, blue skies.....

And i've not seen one single boat out on the water yet....

Do you guys actually sail up there? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you get a chance , go down to the bridge exhibition centre down near the base , sit there and enjoy a coffee while watching the river and you'll see one or two boats go by . Quite serene and surprising when you realise how close you are to all that traffic overhead

There is no water there Neil

its an optical illusion for most of the time

When it comes and goes ,boy does it

great place to visit by boat as is Glanford down at S.Ferriby

cheers Joe

40,000 shipping movements per year. That's 110 per day, every day. Not including pleasure craft. You must pass over at low water.

I used to sail with a mate (who I'm going to greet on-board in Preston Marina tommorrow) in a bilge keel Foxcub 18 on the Humber. We ran aground under the Humber Bridge at high tide once.

Repeat after me. "You can only sail in the channel"

Which moves daily

And the buoys are bigger than me boat /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

cheers Joe

There used to be a Tidal Model of the Humber in a large building where you turn into St Georges Dock where North Sea Ferries are.
They closed it because it cost a lot to maintain. However it tracked the movement of the channel and could be used to predict movements.

We "lightly grazed" a few channel buoys.

Look at the Humber rescue site "1000th rescue" /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

jeez it changes quick

cheers Joe

Hull East.
He's in a High Dependancy Unit in hospital at the moment with pneumonia. Can't say I like the bloke much, but I hope he gets well.

Are you sure he's not just been moved to a side ward, so the other patients don't see his preferential treatment and try to lynch him? could be more spin.

Since nobody else is going to, I'd better mention the Humber Yawl Club at Brough who sail most weekends from their well found mooring pontoon.

I've never been there myself but SWMBOs father is still a member, even though they've now moved south.

Wasn't aware of that , I had pneumonia back in 89 and it took six months before I could hope to do half of what I could manage before , it's not nice and I hope he has a speedy recovery . No great lover of him or his but I wouldn't wish it on anybody

Indeed we do.

HYC @ Brough is only acessible a couple of hours either side of high water so most of the boats go upriver (away from the bridge) if sailing over the tide.

The other option to sail over low water means going out with the tide and on a good day we will pass under the bridge at up to 12Kts SOG. So don't blink else you might miss us.

Feel free to pop in for a pint. Thursday is a good night as its officially club night. Feel free to PM if anyone requires any info on Humber Yawl Club.

SWMBO's father is a wee bit put out that she is keener to sail with me than she was with him. I tease that my Foxcub is such a vastly superior vessel to his Hunter 19 but she suggests that it's a lack of destinations that put her off. They would go out of the creek, go round in circles and head back in. I suspect that they may have been racing and he just never told her!

Trev,
Just spent the day with this man in Preston. Recognise him?

Now that has pleased me. I can now claim to know someone who knows the infamous Lakesailor.

Only thing about Parkie is that he's got a bigger Westerly than me.
Although he does bear a passing resemblance to Clive Woodwards ugly brotherI have to agree.

So when do we get to see you down the HYC then Lakesailor?
