Just got the papers for my SSR renewal. On the form it says a hull ID number is mandatory for boats manufactured from 1/1/98. Anyone had any experience of getting a hull number on a one-off or self-built boat?

When I built my kit car the manufacturers of the kit gave me a little brass plaque with a made-up VIN and my name as builder.

Wikipedia says the RYA can issue these numbers - anyone got one that way? I presume they charge an arm & a leg.

I could be wrong, but I think the number only has to be unique among the boats from that builder. So your boat could be SnowLeopard 001 if you like :)

Think it's a CIN now (Craft Identification Number), and all wrapped up with RCD, as the date suggests.
Check out this thread, notably post #12: http://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=43725

So it seems as though the RYA may be the place to go (but only if you have seriously budget limbs: cost seems to have been £26 in 2012).

P.S. This RYA page is a pdf of a CIN application form which seems intended for home-built boats:

Good luck. And do let us know how it worked out.

P.P.S. Seems it now costs £30, inc VAT.

Yes US site. http://www.yachtdata.co.uk/yachtdatafiles/HIN Number identification.htm European format here.

Why pay RYA £30 to give you a number. Make it up. GB-SNO10001J 003 works just as well. Country GB, Maker SNO, Model 10, Build number 001, Month J(Sept), Year 003(2003).

That has usefully cleared up confusion on my part. Thanks.
I looked up the US site to check on my HIN/CIN and found the manufacturer is a yard on a lake in Arizona!
The boat was built in the USA, but in Galveston, Texas.
I reckon the CIN was applied after import to the UK.
The build number is painted on one of the bulkheads and glassed over.
