Can anyone help please.

I own a 1970 Halcyon 23 with a teak rubbing strake. I noticed that the strake was pulling away from the hull/deck joint. On inspection I found the the timber fillet behind the rubbing strake was rotten.

What timber should I use to replace this fillet.

Cheers

I did this job on my Halcyon23 about 5 years ago and it was not easy. It looked like only a soft wood had been used and secured withbrass screws which had gone rotten. The Iroko rubbing strip was secured with steel screws. I removed the rubbing strip, dug out all the rotten wood and replaced with planed to fit Iroko with sealing mastic. I refastened with Silicon Bronze screws and I replaced the rubbing strip again with Silicon Bronze Machine Screws & Nuts and plugged them. Incidently I found a ¼" hole just behind the rubbing strip, obviously been there from the builders - this solved one leak I had. I had to use lorry straps around the hull to get the rubbing strip back against the joint(I renewed one side) prior to screwing. This work eliminated most of the leaks. As before try th OYCOA web site - if any one is interested, I sold my Halcyon about 3 years ago and is now for sale again with a new diesel engine, PM me if anyone is interested and I will give more info.
