Hull anode gasket

I am replacing the hull anode on my Westerly Merlin 29. It has been mentioned to me that they usually have a rubber seal between the anode and the hull, but the one that I have purchased did not come with one and there isn't one on the boat.

Anyone know whether it is sensible or advisable? Or have I simply been misled?

Thanks!

You've not been misled. Anodes are usually(?) supplied with a backing pad of foam neoprene or plastic. I suspect the only real purpose is to fill the gap between the anode and the hull to prevent bits of weed etc getting stuck and probably to prevent vibration. Chandlers normally stock them for a few pence.

Don't mislead the OP - the "gasket" prevents the back of the anode wasting away and the anode falling off - there is SFA anode material between the steel washer and the back of the anode - if this material wastes away the anode falls off too early. Fit the gasket or smear the back of the anode with sikaflex or similar to prevent the material corroding away.
