Hull anode connects to what?

Boats just come out of the water after a year and the hull anode looks good as new - tracing it back inside the boat, to my horror I find the black cable is not attached to anything in the engine compartment! Pretty sure it should be connected to the engine (volvo penta md22a), it has a bit of green paint on the end of the cable with an eye for a bolt.

Can anyone tell me where exactly on the engine it should connected?

Any convenient bolt on the main body of the engine. The anode should then help to protect the prop and shaft.

As pvb suggests, the anode is there to protect the prop to shaft combination, although a shaft anode is usually more efficient. An engine cannot be protected by a hull anode.

To check if the anode is likely to be working I always do a continuity test from anode to prop. An easy and reassuring test. I do this each time the boat is out of the water.
