Anyone know how to adjust one of these? I have an extremely floppy one and no real idea what to do to amend this situation before heading off Saturday pm. Manual is glib about idler pulleys but fails to give a diagram or take into account that the whole shebang is under the heat exchanger.

My hands find a nut in the middle of what I deduce to be the idler as its not the water pump or PTO shaft, and another nut above and below same, fixing a plate to the engine. Idler(?) pulley seems to be on the plate.

Thanks.

Not sure about the HT6, on th T6 the belt is adjusted by the alternator.

Its a Perkins so wont be complex.

HT there are two belts to keep the height down. Alternator is v easy indeed. Yup on the not complex, its the access and porobably corrosion based potential siezures that are the problem. Bit like, if you can, stripping a psitols is easy but in the dark, down by your knees and all by feel is far harder.

Im not sure about the Horizontal engines, but on my T6354's, the V drive configuration means they are butted up against the back of the boat and the belts are hard to reach. I was going to use one of the detatchable belts from asap's to make life easier.

On yours, I suspect the idler is a manual tensioner. You should be able to undo the nut on it, lever it out, then tighten up again to take the slack out the belt.

On the water pump though, the load is small, so it doesn't need to be that tight really, so long as its not so loose that it will come off.

that's a good point, what tension to set, I keep mine quite slack, good half inch, if they start slipping you soon find out by the squeling noises and poor charging or running hot.

A MG Midget I had chucked a fan belt cos the dynamo front bearing was shot, AA man told me best to keep these belts on the loose side to take strain off the bearing, I reckon the same goes for 6354's

As a tip, digital cameras are wonderful. Reach down with one and take a snap of whats going on under the heat exchanger. That way its much easier to visualise what kind of tensioner arrangement it has and where to fit the spanners.
