Hi all,
am considering buying Broom 37 Continental with 2 x 175 hp HT 6.354 Perkins engines. During an inspection I noticed an oily discharge from the engine exhausts when in the harbour. The vedor assurmes me that this is unburnt diesel and is normal in these engines of this age (1973, rebuilt 1990 600 hours since).

I'm not so sure.

Any comments from HT6.354 owners or other please?

Regards,

Sounds about right to me, most older engines do the same. Check that there's no water in the engine oil and consider having an oil analysis done for peace of mind.

I agree with LJS, but have a good run with it say 30 minutes at least to get them warmed and then have a look at the discharge, it should be a lot clearer.

Hi,

Mine are both T 6354's and both engines do it. Unused Diesel.
It's quite normal for these, especially when not being used regularly.
I expect there is quite a bit of exhaust as well, also normal for older engines not working too hard.
Take 'em for a good run and then check the exhaust, which will be better.
Dont worry...legend has it that 6354's last for ever!.

Steve.

I have two of them 1981 with 1400 hours and yep little bit of oil on discharge in the sea water cooling coming out of exhsust.

Great engines , lots of power but and very reliable, i just changed a sea water pump from Jabsco ( they still make them )

Always wonder where that oil slick outside Faversham creek came from.Thort it came from the brewery when the beer testers went for a whizz.

Same old thing yep! The other thing is oil consumption on these engines check the level and blast at 2250 for 1 hr go back to base and recheck level, if little movement all ok , I'll lay odds that it will eat oil at cruising speed if its been up the river most of its life, especially the Thames, one place not to buy a seagoing boat from. Oil sample check will cost @£35 each well worth it check oil has done >50hrs

Just bought an Ocean 37 with these engines and noticed the same this last week. Assured by other owners in Brooms yard that this is normal and I had a very thorough engine survey (including oil sample analysis) which indicated the engines are good.
