No, not another thread about daft policies, nimbys etc but practicalities.

(BTW what is/was HS1 - the London - tunnel link?)

What is the real impact going to be, assuming it goes ahead? just how much real noise pollution do these lines produce? How much does planning blight beforehand affect house prices and how far does the physical and financial effect of the finished product spread?

The reason I ask is that I am being put under increasing pressure to move closer to family and Wendover is top of their list.

HS1 is the London - chunnel link.

I understand that although there had been strident objections to HS1 for the blight it would cause, it didn't turn out to be as bad as the opponents had predicted. But bear in mind first, that because much of HS1 was in the M20 "corridor", it could be argued that where it didn't cause blight it was because the area was already blighted; second, that HS2 will use trains designed to run faster: 400kph where the HS1 has a design speed of 300kph.

This document describes a visit by Buckinghamshire councillors, officers and members of local interest groups to Kent to assess the impact of HS1.

Oh yes - HS1. That was the rail link that we were told would extend as far as Stirling. So that you get on, complete with car, and wake up in France. We should we have told them to get to France!

The experience in Kent seems to have been nowhere near as bad as was feared.

Indeed if you are near one of the stations (remember there are not as many as on a normal line) it has been beneficial, this includes where there is a station on the old lines which links in. The reason is obvious, from say Gravesend it used to be a big bit of an hour to get into the city, now it's about 20 minutes, and like it or not that helps things like property prices.

The places that have done badly are those where the line passes through but there is no station, like Maidstone.

Obviously there are specific examples of people who did badly.

Current HS1 Eurostars are really French first generation TGV and as such is design is decades old.
Noise (ie wasted energy) in the new double deck TGVs is much reduced due to better areodynamics, different type of motors etc even though they are much faster. German ICEs are the same, ICE1 is noiser and slower than ICE3. The worlds next Lords and Masters the Chinese are just developing their own designs.

The fact that we have not yet gone over 125MPH in day to day railway running just highlights how far we have declined as a country compared to others.

Could have chosen equally sad examples from the Aerospace, Road, Sea, (name your own here) industry.
