Hi,

I have a few lockers which have white mould growing on the hidden surfaces. Can anyone tell me the best way to get rid of it ?

Thanks,

If they are wood or GRP then cleaning with soapy water is a good start. Bleach will also help as will mould remover. Make sure they are dry afterwards and clean regularly to stop it coming back.

A dilute bleach solution is probably the most effective at killing it.

Some mould removers are hypochlorite ( chlorine bleach) based (check the labels) but they wont have any longterm preventative effect

Something like the Polycell 3 in 1 mould remover, as in Richard Taylor's Link, contains benzalkonium chloride which will prevent the mould returning.

A bit of reading around suggested Jeyes fluid as well, has anyone tried this and have any comments ? (I have some to hand so would prefer it to the Polycell 3 in 1). Aiui Jeyes is based on para-chloro-metacresol whatever that is...

Dettol trigger spray mould remover. Brilliant stuff, definitely hypochlorite based.

Dettol Mould and mildew spray is FANTASTIC stuff, I always have a bottle on board.

Damp is the problem, you need to sort out your ventilation and the problem won't be as bad in the future.

A blast of Ozone inside the boat will take away the smells of mould and mildew and kill the spores but without proper ventilation they will return quickly.

I've used Astonish mould & mildew remover to get black mould off, it's very effective, the black literally disappears before your eyes. I wiped it off but didn't rinse and the strong chlorine smell went quite quickly. Had to be careful not to get any on fabrics, etc. The mould hasn't come back yet, if it does anytime soon I'll try Polycell...

It will stain things dark brown. It might be a long time before you get rid of the smell, but fine if you and your crew like it.

It's 4-chloro-3-methylphenol. Which means it's a phenol . Hence the strong phenol like smell.
The cresols are are methyl phenols ... metacresol has the methyl group in the 3 position.
It also has a chlorine atom in the para, or 4, position

A popular method here in tropical and muggy Queensland is a Clove oil Water solution. This actually kills the mould rather than making it hard to see.
Please keep in mind that clove oil is very corrosive and undiluted will eat into almost everything.
Mix one teaspoon of oil into two liters of water. Spray all surfaces in the mouldy section. Leave for a few days and wipe off with white vinegar .
Not a typo. 5mL to 2L
