How will the Greek tax rises affect boating costs?

Hearing on the news today about the Greek government introducing more austerity measures, it got me thinking, how will these affect boaters?

I know the public sector pension freezes won't affect many expats, but what are the fuel duty increases? They also mentioned "sales tax" was going up. Is that the same as their VAT?

Our dream began, and remains as wanting to take our boat over to the Ionian after we went on holiday there several times in the 90's. The many recent articles in all the boating mags have reinforced my original impressions and I want to go sooner rather than later, especially as it's now bound to become much busier because everyone else will have read out about it!

Just need another few years to save up so we can afford to do it..

VAT increased 2% today, (Greek teletext report) it is now, or shortly to be 21%. Worry about the future when it arrives, chill out, have another beer, its warming up now!

Thanks Davy, what about fuel tax?

It just seems that as fast as I can save up, the goalposts keep getting moved. Pension age increases in UK, Greek VAT increases, rising fuel costs, lots more boats getting to the Ionian before me...

At this rate we'll be jacking it all in and setting sail before we're really ready, just out of desperation!

The extra boats generated by recent mgazine articles is probably balanced out by lost boats due to the tax situation out there so I wouldn't worry about not being able to get in!

In many ways the old dream of ultra cheap boating/cruising/living in the eastern med is already history. I find eating and drinking out, shopping, etc etc is largely comparable to the UK anyway. Mooring fees however are still way cheaper than UK south coast and the sunshine, crystal waters, friendly people and beautiful scenery all come free of charge.
The only big one to watch out for IMHO is the proposed boat tax mentioned above. If that goes through then this man's dream is certainly over.
