Weather hasn’t played ball this year and I am sure that I am not alone in feeling more than a little frustrated at the amount of sailing I’ve managed so far.

As you may know I am on year 2 of a renovation – work in the winter and sail in the summer. This means that not everything could be described as perfect.

Thinking back, I have done 15 outings, mostly day sailing but 5 overnights, so about 21 days on board so far. Mirage covered significantly less than at the same time last year but....

RYA Active marina boat handling courses (x2) have really helped our confidence

I have learned to single hand – which has been a long standing ambition
The newly fitted Origio and Sink have worked well and I have been able to cook a variety of plan but edible meals (I don’t cook at all at home so this is a major personal achievement)

Every member of my family has been involved in one way or another. All have sailed, most stayed away overnight with me and for the one that hasn’t he has at least had a few days around the marina – even just playing in the dingy was fun.

The new rig is much improved and much easier to handle.

No more shouting –and this is a MAJOR improvement. Id agree that shouting at crew is a mark of a skipper not knowing what you are doing .... last year I was clueless but I guess you have to start somewhere.

Sitting here looking at another red line round the Inshore forecast picture of Britain its easy to get a bid fed up with the weather. But thinking back, it’s not been so bad at all. What have you achieved so far this year that has made you smile?

PhillM,

about my only achievment this year has been getting my fishfinder to work !

Slightly better outings average than last season so far, but that's not saying much.

Re shouting, one of my favourite moments was when tied up at the Folly pontoon; a 19' Caprice or similar came up, nervous looking SWMBO on foredeck, seagull engine roaring; then the skipper yelled above the engine noise, not realising that meant we were receiving too,

" For Christs' Sake Look Natural !!! " :)

I fitted AIS for the first time and really enjoyed seeing ships long before I could see them, if you know what I mean.

Our "cruise" was a bit rubbishy, what with the weather and some minor illness, but in retrospect, we had some great passages, including 10 hours from Yarmouth to Cherbourg door-to-door.

Met some nice people - couldn't ask for more.

In re the weather I think I can truthfully say this is the hardest summer I've had in forty years, and I'm only trying to maintain semi retirement mode.
