How useless is that?

Looking last night at one of those free swidlery booklets that come in the post. Most useless item, 'floating racing sunglass'. Now what I would like to know is how many racing skippers would perform MOB recovery, let alone a SOB recovery?

Floating glasses are a great idea for pi**ed people getting on and off boats. I had a particularly hungover snorkel around one morning in Greece looking at a mass of boulders trying to find my wife's glasses which had fallen over the night before whilst walking the plank.

I found them but didn't like being near the hulls of all the boats alongside the wall as everybody around woke up in a harbour with no amenities. I'd rather it was the glasses that floated

Sound advice. When swimming I always wear my old Pierre Alain helmet with holes drilled in it to make it lighter and let let the water flow through more easily.

What do you use?

I always though snorkelling was dangerous; so apart from a hat to stop the boat landing on your head, earplugs to stop the barnacles taking root in there and shutting your mouth to keep the contents of other peoples' holding tanks out of your digestive tract, what other PPE do you need?

Well as a testosterone fuelled 54 year old I wear just me trunks, mask and snerkel. I used to use an old brass diving helmet but my head keep sticking to the bottom.

Never snorkel under your boat without wearing a helmet, it only takes as passing boat to create a wash and 2 or 7 tons of boat taps you on the head and the lights go out. Look a prat and stay alive.

Will this do?

I should have been wearing full body armour probably and a heat suit in case a meteor hit the harbour and turned the water into incandescent gas, but all I was thinking about was "glasses cost money and we'll waste the rest of the holiday trying to get replacemenents".

Good point about the helmet though - must bring along an old cycle one next time.

You'll never be able to get head submerged if you do. They tend to have a polystyrene liner, I think.

Dont the swimming pools attendants give you strange looks? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Please, please never put in ear plugs. The water pressure, even a few feet down will drive the plugs right into your ears and will probably require a trip to the hospital to extract them. This is based on my knowledge as an ex BSAC diving instructer. Have no worries about barnacles taking route.

A pointy cork and a strong rubber band should seal up the other openings OK - but put both on below decks or you might be arresed.
