how to wire up a dsc with a hand held gps??

Two ways to use the PC cable - one is to cut off the PC end and connect it to the radio. The other is to make an adaptor cable from the XM radio to the PC cable end.

PC end of your cable should be a DB9 socket. RS232 ( not NMEA ) serial data is available on pins 2 and 3 of it with ground on pin 5. Connect pin 2 to the data input of the radio and pin 5 to the data ground of the radio.

If that doesnt work connect pin 3 of the db9 to the data input of the XM radio.

If that doesnt work then either the output of the Garmin is not enough to drive a NMEA port.
OR the XM radio is properly NMEA compliant and is ( correctly ) ignoring the borderline signal levels being delivered from the Garmin.

You simply can't blow anything up using the levels available on the PC connector plug but I am not responsible for it if you do!

PS - licence you radio first and register get the MMSI number set up.
