A British Army regiment have been given a 1936 Nicholson 32-34 foot yacht. Although a great gift it is not the sort of boat that the Regiment could maintain and manage. I have advised them to sell it ASAP before it has a chance to deteriorate but where would you advertise such a craft??
Thanks for any suggestions.

What a shame you feel they should get rid of it.

In my opinion, I think that an Army Regiment is just the place for a classic yacht. Maintenance and management can be split across many hands and much more likely to well kept than in individual ownership.
Most importantly, it provides YOUNG people access to a classic yacht – and this is I think is really imperative to keeping classics afloat in the long term. You never know, but a few young men might even consider classic ownership in future simply by being exposed to one in their regiment! The real crisis for classic yacht survival, in my opinion, is providing a younger generation of sailors access to beautiful wooden yachts, so they can really appreciate the difference between a wooden and plastic boat; I was lucky to have been given this opportunity and hence buying Roach.

To answer your question though, I think the wooden boat market has completely stagnated and selling it will be tough. The person to talk to is Peter Gregson of Wooden Ships.

No not really, it's only ones that are up for daft prices that are difficult to shift, good ones at realistic prices are still selling.

Whilst I agree with you sadly the tempo of ops over the last decade and recruiting difficulties has meant an end to the black economy that Regiments in the past would have used to run the sailing, saddle club or skiing chalet etc.

I wonder if the ASA or Keel YC might take her on,

Pete
