I need to repair some smaller and bigger scratches and patches in my gelcoat. Which sanding paper and polish should i use. And is there a special technique or manual somewhere?
depends on the scratch, of course. If its something that needs filling, you usually need to deepen it a bit to get a decent void to fill, and actually you are then starting a fair amount of effort. Colour match is an art. If its just swirls you wish to polish out you ll need a proper polisher, not those useless car jobbies. Bear in mind ,gel needs at least 15 degrees to cure, so winter isnt a good time. Have a look at CFSnet.co.uk. They re always very helpful, but a good set of pigments, papers, resin etc will cost £50 or so (though you ll have enough for a whole boat!), and a polisher+pads+compounds from Toolstation.co(m/uk) probably £60. Then you are set to tackle anything, but it really needs to be warmer. Its not hard, but it is time consuming.
