I have a Volvo exhaust silencer in which the SS end caps have started to rust. I have a new silencer and would like to simply replace it by pulling off the hoses and pushing them onto the new tails. The space is restricted. I don't want to damage the hoses if possible. Does anyone have a suggestion for easy removal. They have been on for more than 9 years but seem in good condition.

I take the hose off the manifold when winterising and can confirm it's a bugger of a job. I'm afraid I just grab with both hands, waggle it like mad and accept the inevitable loss of skin on knuckles.
Not found a solution yet. Sorry.

The tools listed all seem to be intended to remove hose clips rather the hose itself.

Persoanally, I work a flat bladed screwdriver under the hose to break its adhesion to the fitting at one point and then work round as far as possible. Once part of the hose is unstuck it becomes easier to release the rest by twisting. The challenge it to do it without destroying the hose.

There are plenty there for unsticking the hose which are basically screwdrivers with a U bend (make one?), but there are a handful designed to release and pull a hose off.

Do you have room to use a strap wrench to twist it?

Thanks for all your help.
I had lunch, and with renewed strength, found that I could get in a position to exert some more leverage. I also had advice to try and remove the rear pipe first. With that they were both off in 5 mins.
The flanges were both rusted through allowing the initial minute leak, but it could have been nasty, as the silencer is hidden away and only superficially inspected once a year. Supposed to be made by Volvo of SS. Obviously a very poor grade was used but it looked lovely from the outside.

Thank you for the link to this tool. I have a 4" Rubber Exhaust Pipe which has split at the place where it slides over the exhaust outlet and although I have cut off the end of the hose, trying to push the remainder of the hose back on to the metal pipe is very difficult as I am having to work at arms length and cannot push downwards. This tool may hopefully allow me to twist the pipe and at the price its worth a try.

not entirely Volvo's fault I'm afraid. Stainless is generally pretty good in salt water - until it gets hot. It's still better than mild steel, but hot saline solution will seek out any weaknesses and rot through - especially welds, where the material may no longer be quite to spec!

Well done, you were lucky. I had to hacksaw the end of my hose off!
I put a sleeve and new foot long length of hose onto the old hose, so it should be a bit easier next time.
The new elbow that I put on was aluminium but I was thinking of getting a stainless one made up, I'm disappointed to hear that they have an equal failure time.
