Always fill your kettle from empty with a measuring jug for the exact amount of water you want to heat. We keep a plastic jug with our own marks, in indelible felt pen on the side for various uses, so we never leave unused boiling water in the kettle to go cold.

We do the same when we are on shore power (electric kettle unlimited unmetered electricity) as it is quicker and it's nice to do a little something for the environment /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As an extra twist, if you have a foot pump for fresh water then find out how many pumps fill a cup (usually about one and a half). Multiply up by the number of cups wanted, then put that number in your kettle.

As an extra etra twist, most cups take 300 mls so if you reduce this to 270 mls a cup, ie dont fill the cup, you can not only save an extra 10%...you wont notice drinking slightly less and you have less risk of spillage.

It all goes to a change of attitude.

Asceticism rules OK ?

Why not go the whole hog and rig a platform at the top of the mast, and live up there like Saint Simeon Stylites ?

Yes, so do we. All unused kettle water goes in the thermos which we use to fill the kettle, of course.

That's exactly what we have done for many years. Three downward presses (and therefore three upward pumps) on our Whale galley pump, exactly fills our two tea/coffee mugs!

Obviously works for the midnight watch 'Cup-a-soup' too!!!

When my swmbo's daughter lived with us, the first thing she did in the morning was go downsatirs and fill the kettle to the brim and switch it on. She then went upstairs for a wash knowing that, by the time she had finished, the water would have boiled for her one cup of coffee. The remainder was left to go cold.

Teenagers - don't you just love 'em? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

What a relief, the planet has been saved.................. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.
Why did someone not suggest this to Al Gore sooner ?

I was busy working-up a whole range of similar 'save the planet' schemes! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

For those with other halves. etc that completely fill the kettle for one cup, you could glue some large clean stones in it. Not only would they reduce the capacity but they would retain heat for the next cup.

Can I suggest you add a humour/irony smiley face before someone thinks you are being serious? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
