Hello,

Anyone know how to program the MMSI into this handheld VHF ?

Manual says return to dealer but I'm sure its simple using something like hyperterminal.

Needs a special data lead to connect to the PC and programming software. Your delaer should have programmed it when you bought it or had it deliverd to you with your MMSI alrady in it if they did not have the gear.

Bought it in september at the Southampton Boat Show. Can't remember who I bought it from. I thought at the time that the MMSI could be programmed in by the user like most if not all of the fixed units. I just bought on impulse and hadn't checked out the spec. Also i didn't have an MMSI at the time. Why do you ask when I purchased the radio?

Handheld DSC units have now been withdrawn. Additinally you have to apply for a seperate MMSI number - these start with 2359. Handheld DSC sets only store the position if attached to the charging unit, which in turn needs to be connected to a GPS unit. As soon as the unit is removed from the charger then the location is stored and remains in the unit. So if your charger unit is not on the boat and connected to the GPS it really is rather a waste of time.

Did you buy the unit as a support to your fixed VHF?

Charging unit is fitted to the boat and is connected to GPS I have a fixed Ray54E as well. You are correct the Simrad is a backup to the fixed VHF. Why were the handheld DSC radios withdrawn?
