This is not a sneaky way to publicise an item that I have lying around as I am going to sell it anyway.

Not sure how best to sell this - on here or ebay so would appreciate any advice as to which way and also some guide as how best to price it/them please.

The outboard/s is a twin cylinder 4hp Johnson 2 stroke with integral and remote tank (included).

Have used this from new for several years and then one day we were at anchor in Tayvallich when we caught by a huge wind gust and the dinghy with outboard attached inverted. The outboard head was in the water for a couple of minutes before we could recover it. Got it onboard and then stripped as much as we could, carb etc and washed all in meths. Reassembled it and it started first pull. A few weeks later we were using the dinghy in Oban bay when all of a sudden we lost power so I took the o/b to our yacht centre and they diagnosed the drive shaft coupling at the top had sheared.

As I liked the engine so much I bought another one (running) off eBay. As I guessed ours had been more lightly used I cannabilised the Ebay one and swapped the drive shaft over. I also swopped the carb as our original one had been more difficult to start since the dunking. This fixed the slow start but a year or so later the engine got harder to start again so I lost faith in it and got another 2 stroke off ebay.

Since then (5 years ish) the complete outboard and the second one in pieces have been stored at home.

Having a big clear out so want to sell the whole lot.

I do not want to lead anyone up the garden path by saying it runs perfectly so am going to sell them as seen. Am sure anyone who is handy with engines could get one good one out of the two and maybe if they bought the cog bit that broke on the top of the drive shaft could maybe get two runners.

So how best do you think to sell everything bearing in mind also the problem of carriage - ebay or here and roughly how much should I ask/expect to get ?

Appreciate any advice.

Edit: should also say that our original one has had very light use - guess we used it for 5 years + or so with maybe 20-30 uses each season.

stick them on e-bay at 99p as "spares or repair" include a summary of the history & see what happens. You can always include a reserve price if worried about them going for a song. Price up courier carriage & include a postage cost as "collection only" significantly reduces the potential customer base.

I sold a good one in fine running order about two years ago. It got £160 which I thought was a good price. I have just paid £250 for a very good Yamaha 4hp 2-stroke (which I regard as a better engine)
If you got over £100 for yours I would be surprised. Lots of motors sold on ebay as good runners are faulty, so if you are honest about the condition most punters will think you are fibbing and it's a pile of poo.
I would sell them as two separate auctions one as a runner, but unused and the other as needing attention. Sell the better one first. If you put them both on you will get scammed into splitting them for a punter and his fictitious friend. (It's too complicated to describe easily, but it happens a fair bit).

Carriage will be fairly dear, but on the other hand if you are selling it from Liverpool there shouldn't be any problem with enough punters close by.

Thanks Lakesailor (& Searush)

Yes, just had a look at the For Sale section here and saw a 2003 4hp runner go for £200 so think you are right - a ton if I am lucky. Don't think I can be bothered selling them separately so will put them on here for £95 collected and see what happens. Do you have to pay eBay fees if the item you are selling does not make its reserve ?

Edit: also seems a fair price as the buyer could end up with a nice little engine - I really miss the remote tank on the one I have now.
