Our Autohelm 2000 (George) is noisy.
You really notice it down below when trying to take a nap and also up top when you turn him off and suddenly the world goes quiet.

Is the 2000 known for being noisy?
Are the other tiller pilots any quieter?

Anyone got any bright ideas how to reduce his prattle.

We do love him dearly and wouldn't be without him but boy he does go on a bit.

That's the one with the barrel shaped compass unit and separate actuator.?

Only sailed with one once. Don't remember it making any significant amount of noise.

Or are you referring to a more modern version

odd but my 2000+ is almost silent... maybe the + is about the ball race thrust instead of a worm?

This looks like our George,

I understand that to be the old analogue one. It will have no dead band , so it is perpetually correcting .

Later versions have intelligence to cope with seastate variations, and only correct on a sustained departure from the desired heading.

Its digital according to the instruction manual q.v.

The analogue one was the one I was thinking of.

We have a 2000 and hydraulic steering, hardly any noise at all, perhaps you a drive or bearing trying to tell you something?

By the way, we call ours FRED; (Freekin Ridiculous Electrical Device)

Good luck and fair winds. :)

I have a Raymarine SPX-5 Tillerpilot which I use on my Hydrovane self-steering as & when.

I'm surprised how noisy it is in action.

Down below in the aft cabin the transmitted sound is quite intrusive.

Otherwise, it does its job pretty well.
