How to make decorative lashing for safety rails?

I need to connect the aft loop of the new safety rails on my boat to the pushpit. I have seen this on other boats done skillfully and decoratively with a lashing (is lashing the correct term!?) about 5 cms long.

What is the type of lashing that you would suggest and how do you tie it?
 
Its not just for decoration.If you need to get rid of the guardwires quickly to recover a man overboard you cut through the lashing with a knife.

Im no good at explaining knot tying hopefully someone else will give it a go.

I realise that the rope connection is important but my question was really directed at how to make it look good but at the same time remain secure.
 
For want of better advice I would suggest start by attaching with a bowline one end of your cord to the wire. You then go through the pushpit and back to the wire eough times to make a suitable bulk. You then treat it as a whipping ie wrap the cord around and around neatly to make the ful length.
The problem becomes how to neatly tie off the end? One way would be to have laid another piece of cord (or even wire) in a loop so that both ends emerge from the end opposite to where you finish.( tempory cord)
Cut your cord with a spare length less than the length of the neatly covered section. Pass it through the emerging loop of the tempory extra cord then by pulling the 2 ends of the tempory extra cord you can pull the end of your main cord under the wrapped section. Until the end is laid under all the wraps. Your tempiory cord should be pulled right out and discarded. The actual attachment of the lifeline will be very strong due to the multiple turns through the wire and pushpit which act like multiple purchases and the end needs hardly motre than to be laid neatly. good luck olewill
 
Get hold of the Clifford Ashley Book of Knots, not a cheap tome so borrow one or try the Library.

Everything you need to know is in there, you may learn a lot and enjoy yourself at the same time.
 
1. Must be as strong as the guardrail.
2. Must be easily cut in the event you need to get someone back on board.

First attach to either guardwire loop or pushpit wit bowline or similar. Connect the two parts mentioned above with a number of loops. About 4 laps (8 X ply) should be sufficient to meet strength requirement without needing excessive hacking to cut it. Finish by doing a series of half-hitches to use up the spare. Your skill in completing the half hitches will determine the effect.

You could try a half-hitch followed by a reverse half-hitch, ad infinitum to prevent the hitches twisting round the lashing!
