What happened? There seems to be something wrong with the big red sail (is that a spinnaker) when it first goes up - is that it, or have I missed something more dramatic?

First I miss judged the amount of tide sweeping us back down wind, then the spinnaker went up tangled, then the guy got caught around the port bow cleat, me heaving on it made the clutch slip meaning the spinnaker was only 2/3 way up, by which time we had slipped about a boats length down wind of the mark we were supposed to be rounding and the boat had stopped dead in the water!

We ended up dropping the kite, unfurling the jib, sailing back up to the mark, then launching the kite again (without indecent!) and continuing on our way, by that time our arch rival "Dancer" had recovered the 1/4 mile lead we had!

I am really rubbish with spinnakers. But i can get one up and pulling a bit quicker! :rolleyes:

You really need to address the sound. Your camera needs isolating from the structure of the boat. All the noise from the running rigging gear seems to be transmitted to the camera.
I used a wooden post to get the camera higher and this deadens the sound transmission.
Even a Manfrotto clamp will have rubber lined jaws which improve matters.

Maplins do a mount, but it needs using with care (use a lanyard to prevent camera loss)

Had similar incident last week, outside Yarmouth, wind dies and hit big tide, get within 20 feet of mark and realise we are not going to make it.

Of course we tacked with the spinaker up!

We were not the only boat to do this :)

Yes the noise transmits terribly doesn't it. The camera is in a plastic waterproof case similar to a GoPro, so sound from outside must be slightly muffled. Although I had it mounted on the windscreen of my Fathers 1936 Austin 7 and conversation in the car was quite clear. It's mounted on the pull pit rail and does have a rubber isolator sleeve. I have some of that soft non slip matting stuff , I'll try some of that and gaffer tape on the rail first see if that helps. At least on this occasion it masked the foul language which I am quite sure was going on!

Oh yes..... I think a drunk blind man with half a clue could get a spinnaker up and drawing quicker than that! lol

Thanks. I understand now. Hard luck - and congratulations for having the guts and good humour to post the video!

I'm really looking forward to lesson number 2!:encouragement:

I'm not; it was a dreadful waste of a few minutes of my life. If the chap whose video this is could please take one of two tips;

1: Return boat to mooring. Place ad for boat on Apolloduck. Sell boat & polish average car for the rest of your life.
2: Spend a few pounds on some racing & tactician lessons for you and your crew. You and your crew need to prep & put that spinnaker up and down properly at least 50 times before you race again. Then realise you can actually do it better after the practice.
