how to keep brass shiny

I have an old boat which has small brass louvres on the outer doors which were black untill I cleaned them, I know there is a spray you can get so you don't polish them all the time as the boat is in remote part of Africa can I just varnish them or has anyone any other ideas, please

Clear Lacquer is what you want. You can buy in spray or to paint on.

The trouble with clear lacquer is that eventually it breaks down and the metal tarnishes under it, you then have to remove the lacquer and the tarnish.

Get a dry micro fibre cloth, soak with brasso, let dry. Every time you pass the the louvres just give them a wipe with said cloth.

Tip from Steward of RY Brittania, which had acres of brass rails.

I agree with Brasso and if you give them a spray with wood polish afterwards the shine lasts longer.
