How to identify yamaha outboard year of production

Can someone tell me the year of my Yamaha four-stroke outboard please? I've found various guides to decoding the serial, but mine does not seem to match.

I believe M is the year letter which would make it 2007

I did have an original dealer list but it disapeared when the engine went.

Thanks Clive. You might be right there.... but I'd be a bit more confident if that chart contained M. Other charts I have found are totally different, but maybe for US models? e.g. Yamaha Outboard Serial Number Location and Model Identification | PerfProTech.com

I would have guessed the engine was a bit older than 2007 as well.

I found the dealer chart in my tablet images folder. It is exactly the same as the one i gave a link to.

I am confident that is correct as it tied up perfectly with the Yam i was sourcing spares for.

They do state that the letters are recycled but that is a 23 - 24 year cycle ( they don't use at least E and O at all ) So unless you version looks like it was out of the ark ( 1983 ish ) then it has to be a 2006 / 2007 . It can not be any more recent than that as they have not made them yet.

Right you are Clive. I checked the engine today and there is a plate on the opposite side saying 2006. Cheers.

From 1984 until 2005, the following logic was embedded in Yamaha Model numbers:

It may be on the Iboats site, which is USA based , but that does not stack up against the codes in the image of the OP.
The codes I refer to are from European dealers.

But the OP has found a sticker identifying it as 2006. According to your link that would be a code letter N , not M

Well blow me you are correct. The link does indeed show that.

Fortunately for me my retained copy shows N as 2005 although i was incorrect in saying they were identical.

Any way the other sticker gave the OP his year answer, which we both agree on.
