its a lot lot easier to refil an empty cartridge because it is open at the far end which alows you to 'push' the grease in from the bottom. Also as far as i know and is quite possibly wrong the only real way to fill a gun is to push it down into a drum of grease while drawing back the plunger at the same speed so 'air' never enters into the equation. and that is a tub of grease with no disk/washer on top. these I've always understood were just to keep the grease clean and 'tidy' in the tub and not really for gun filling as that disk would take some pushing down for the length of a gun . for my part i always use a used cartridge (the same one) and a flat scraper.
