I'm trying to remove the single lever morse control from my cockpit as I'm currently in the process of painting the deck.

It's an Ultraflex B85 like this

http://www.tcschandlery.co.uk/6489/Ultraflex--B85-Side-Mount-Control.html

and I can't figure our how to dismantle it

I can take the handle off no problem (single screw behind popoff plate in centre of unit). But I can't figure out how to remove the next bit of plastic which (I think) covers the 4 machine screws which secure the outside of the unit to the bit inside the boat. Unless I use a large hammer  but then i will need a new Morse control.

Anyone every dismantled one of these before? Anyone got a drawing?

Hi, a boat we had was fitted with an all metal one and the fastning was by studs and nuts. I had to access the back of the housing to undo the four nuts IIRC. Hope this helps.

Hi Rotrax - I'll try and get a picture of the back of the unit and will post in a couple of days perhaps you would help me out and let me know if it looks familiar.

The cover on ours (similar, but not identical) is plastic, and I'm pretty sure it just pops off once the handle has been removed.

Its a push fit, held in place with inbuilt clips which are moulded into the part your trying to remove, you should be able to to press the clips in with a screw driver to remove it, possibly from the bottom , I have the same control and it had me beat for a while until I levered it.

Hi Mike,

I've tried every which way to get the b*gger out. I attach a a couple of pics do they jog your memory at all?

Rotrax - I tried undoing the nuts on the back of the unit but the screws just spin - I think it's designed to be dismantled from the outside.

Hav emailed manufacturers but I'm not holding my breath. No drawings on website and customer support page redirects to sales@blahblah

This is so frustrating:mad:

Yep exactly the same as mine

If I remember correctly the clips are at 12 and 6 oclock on the back of the plastic circle near to the centre where the gear lever fits in, you can see them in your pics they are quite long and a right pig.

With mine I took the bull by the horns an stuck a screwdriver in from the bottom an levered it off, it distorted as I did it, but came out undamaged, sorry I cannot be of anymore help, good luck.

Take note which way it comes off, i.e top and bottom as it controls which way the gear lever points, if replaced upside down the lever will point down, I found that out the hard way.

So the bit I need to lever is the round plastic bit with 4 semi-circular "bites" in it (detents?) And I lever it straight out (towards the camera)? Right?

Sorry to be thick but it seems to need a lot of forcing and I don't want to bust it if I can avoid it.

It comes off all in one piece, if you look under the cog at six oclock which the gear lever fits onto, you will see a small oblong slot, which a screwdriver will fit into, put the screwdriver into it an push down so it lifts the clip upwards towards the gear wheel, what I did was to put another screwdriver under the whole assembly an levered both at the same time.

Thinking more about it, to be honest I can't remember if you have to lever the clip up or down, try both

Hope that makes sense

Yep -perfect sense I think that's the mistake I was making not lifting the clip AND levering out at the same time.

Thanks for the help :)

Success!

Finally got the morse control in pieces (manufactured pieces not shattered pieces). Indeed it was necessary to push the internal clip up (levering the screwdriver down) whilst simultaneously springing the oblong plate outwards at the bottom and the sides. Thanks to all who offered suggestions and sent photos.
