I tried an oil change for the first time today (old Mitsubishi K2C) but couldn't get any oil to come out using the integral brass pump that attaches by a metal pipe to the sump. There was plenty of resistance when I tried to pull the pump -is there a knack or has something gone wrong??

I dont know the engine but either the pipe between pump and sump is blocked or there is a valve between the two you have not opened. (or on the discharge side of the pump possibly) it's going to be something simple stupid and obvious once you've found it. I take it you can move the pump plunger a tiny amount? ie not siezed or locked (screwed down).

Dont worry about the filler the crankcase has vent anyway (and i have never had to take the cap off any of my car engines to drain the oil!)

AS VicS points out, an in line valve or 'tap'?... On a previous boat there was a in line 'tap' between the sump and the pump..hidden under the ***engine. Took me ages to learn about it!!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The pump handle on my old Perkins 'screwed' to lock it, instead of a valve, and as said, important to have the oil hot.

I will try

[/ QUOTE ] If necessary work backwards. Disconnect the pipe leading from the pump and see what happens. Then disconnect the suction pipe from the pump. Finally loosen the connection between the pipe and the sump.

Carefully of course and be prepared for oil to leak from any joint that is lower than the oil level in the sump.

The pump on my engine has a blanking-off plug on the outlet. Maybe yours has a similar arrangement?

I found mine the hard way. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

On my Thornycroft T90 there is a little seacock-like switch which you have to turn to open the pump. It's just below the pump handle, but you have to look / feel for it.

Had the same problem myself yesterday.
I have a Beta 10.
After trying every thing else I found a 1/4 turn valve under the pump.
Worked fine after that.

Very embarrassing as this is the 3rd time I have changed the oil. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Senility is setting in.
