Must say that the varnish was very thick - I'd have thinned it a lot, but I may well have been an idiot all these years?

Thicker it goes on, the more protection you have, surely?

Certainly the first few coats need to be thinned to help them soak into the wood (I do 1:1, then 3:1, then 10:1 varnish:thinners for the first three coats). But once that's done you want to be building up film thickness, not spreading a thin layer and then letting most of that evaporate off anyway. Obviously not so much in one coat that you get runs, though.
