Read yesterday on Teletext that an inquest had recorded a verdict of accidental death following a tragedy last year. After a night in the pub a family had put their two children to bed on their cruiser in Upton on Severn. One of the children aged four managed to climb out through a porthole and drowned. Police divers found him under the boat the next morning.

Very sad. For those with small children it might be worth double checking that there is no way they can 'escape' through a porthole or hatch.

Very good point

Excellent point.. However, we have found it very difficult to get the balance right on board our boat with the kids.

On the one hand we want to lock up the boat at night so that they cant get out and on the other we want to make sure that in the event of a fire we/they get out easily.

Re: Very good point

Even more difficult with our new boat, if kids sleep in the Vee-berth in the forward cabin, with the dinette left up in the saloon, and the parents in the aft cabin. This seems to be a 'no win' situation, as the only satisfactory solution is to have a single-cabin boat and put up with either having to go to bed early or keeping the children awake until adults' bed-time....

Then, why buy a twin-cabin boat if you have kids?
