My boat gets full death every time I take her out, even if just for a minute.

My car on the other hand would require a very long straight road, with no other vehicles and a complete absence of speed cameras/policemen.

Oeerrr, don't think so. In the descriptions of each duty "rating", they specify what percentage of the time you CAN run at full throttle without it going bang (the duty cycle). In the case of an R1 rating, that's all the time (although some of these engines with higher ratings are exactly the same engines as the "leisure" rated engines, but with the fuel pump max setting changed: i.e. you too can pretend you have a commercially rated engine, simply by not using the top end of the throttle travel).

Probably another misconseption on my part but I thought it was recommended that the max cruising speed for volvo's was just 200 rpm off max? If so the other 200 isn't going to make much difference in small bursts is it?

Nope, should be fine, cos you're operating within the duty cycle. Keeps the props clean, and burns off excess fuel before landing.

disclaimer: if something was already weak (like a dodgy head gasket, or a ropy belt), then the full throttle run might be the time when you discover that existing weakness...
