New boat was supplied with two keys for the washboard, as I leave one with the marina, I figured that it could be a disaster if I lost the other whilst away. I did what most people would do and visited the local branch of a major key cutting and shoe repair franchise, only to be informed that the key blank is non standard and will have to be ordered specially. Now it looks just like a standard "Yale" type to me, 6 weeks and 3 unsuccessful tries later proves that it isn't!

So I call the local dealer, who can get the blanks from the manufacturer (Jeanneau) at a cost of £25 (YES £25!!!!) each + vat and cutting, but it does include shipping.

Do any of the wise men or women of the forum know where I can obtain the blanks or know the name of the lock manufacturer? There are no manufacturers marks or name on either.

Thanks in anticipation.

It's likely that you'd be able to change the lock cylinder for a commonly-available type. If you take the washboard to a locksmith, they'll advise you. Once you get the cylinder, it should be a DIY job to swap it.

Hi,

We had the same issue with our Jeanneau, only 2 keys supplied.

Our local key cutter managed to find a suitable blank for far less than £25. Pretty sure we got 4 keys cut for about £20.

The blanks look nothing like the original but do the job. Square top, two holes, with the number 70 engraved on them.

Hope this helps.

Instead of the key/shoe service shop, try a specialist locksmith. I had the insides of a lock changed at one time, as we had lost a set of keys. The key/shoe shop was unable to change the insides.

The specialist locksmith would probably have a wider range of blanks.

Didn't mean to infer getting the insides changed, just that you might get better service.

Where are you in the West Mids? Can recomend a locksmith in Walsall if interested

I don't know if this will prove helpful, but a larger number of washboard locks used by AWB are made by Southco. They can be contacted directly and keys ordered or as I have found occasionally a suitable blank sourced from a high street lock smiths.

Had a similar problem.

French boat..
French lock profile... Cannot find any where in UK

However common as chips in France.. .. Sorry that should be frittes?

Can you get over to France easily?

Same happened to us with our sunfast. UK agent wanted fortune for new locks. Local key cutting shop had what you would call a mega book of key pattens. Took some time to locate the right patten but cost was only £4.50 per key in the end. So go and look.
