How much wear before an anode needs replacing?

WELL IF THEY HAVE ONLY LOST 10G IN ONE SEASON THEY SHOULD BE OK TILL THE NEXT SO YOU MAY ASWELL GET YOUR MONEYS WORTH OUT OF THEM !!

I agree with dsw, although I would not have shouted at you so loudly, You should be able get another seasons use out of them easily. I guess at that size they wont be too expensive so replace them next year.

You can probably cast some new ones from old hull anodes!

Dithering myself whether to replace an anode that's about 20% wasted after one year...

Logic tells me that the very irregular pitting has actually increased the surface area exposed compared to a smooth new one.

But as a new anode costs much less than a new fixed prop I ought to change it.

But if the prop goes I have a good excuse for getting a nice feathering one.....

Personally I'd remove the corrosion on the surface with a grinder, cut a few shallow grooves to restore the surface area and re-use it if it's 20% used up. Make sure you wear a good respirator if you do though-zinc flu will make you feel like death for 24 hours if you get a lungful of the oxide.

As far as I know,Zinc oxide doesn't conduct so I wouldn't reuse it unless cleaned up.

Beserksail - we have been very pleasantly surprised by how little current the fridge draws when coupled to the keel cooler plate. The fridge was set to be cold enough to make ice. We have a Nasa battery monitor which took a bit of getting used to. The fridge compressor is quite quiet but at first I noticed when it went on and watched as the monitor displayed 7 or 8 amps drain but only for a short time and not too often ( the drain, not me watching ). The real benefit will be felt when we get down to the Med.
