How much should a set of cushions cost?

I know that this is an open ended question, but I am in the process of getting quotes for a set of cockpit cushions.
It is for 2 sides of a wide cockpit. So 4 bench cushions and 4 back cushions. These are custom made for the curve of the combing in part and the benches are about 1.80 metres.

I am getting quotes from £500-£800. As I have no point of reference, is this a reasonable price?

And yes I know I can get some from chandlers for £40 a shot, it is just that someone wants to know what to buy me for a birthday present. Although the quotes are far far higher than I expected.

Many thanks

If you are getting quotes from various sources in that range, then that is the going rate. Firms don't deliberately "over price" if they want to get business.

That is reasonable. The cost of foam is astonishing.
trying giving eastcoastbernie a PM, she will also price it up for you and comes recommended from several forumites.

Yes but if you are looking at adds in sailing mags then the price range may be high.
A local ( non 'marine') upholsterer may be cheaper.

We did our camper cushions (2 berths) 6" foam sandwitch (3" firm+ 3" medium) £100
we bought materiall at £5 per yard ( advertised in camper shops at £20) Total cost with zips etc sb £200

The key word is "may" - in my experience there is little difference if a business is operating in the same manner. There will always be people who do craft type jobs in low overhead situations - but the material costs are similar and it is only cheaper to make up if the person will work for low wages and has no overheads.

I recently made a whole set of cushions for all of the interior of my boat, a 30 footer. two for the forward cabin and two for the rear singles, each 2mx1m roughly. then galley area, chart table, another 6 there in all. The foam alone cost over £500. The material around £100. My brothers wife did the sewing work, which was quite a job and took a few days. This again wouldve probably cost at least £200.

Its certainly not a cheap job but we saved much money by doing it ourselves, sourcing the foam cheaply.

I got a template made up and went to local industrial unit in Telford and picked the foam I wanted and they cut it for me there and then. Then bought the material and got a local seamstress to make the covers including zips. Total price around £150 for two long cushions (curved) and back cushions for a Bavaria 38.
Would be worth checking in your area what is available, provided you do not mind the hassle of running around. Otherwise prices quoted did not seem unreasonable.

I may have said this before, but when we did our camper van we, too, were surprised by the price of foam. We bought some ex-NATO foam mattresses on ebay for £3 a time - 6ft x 2ft by 4" thick. Some glue and an electric carving knife and we made some fabulous cushions for a fraction of what we were being quoted.
